This is third year of this great fishing event. It is held from December 17, 2011 to March 17, 2012 in the Greater Orlando area.
This fresh water fishing tournament is a CPR event. That means each angler catches, photographs and releases each fish the angler catches. This tournament is absolutely free and is open to all anglers who register at any of the central Florida sponsor sign-up spots.

There are very few rules. Anglers can fish any location in the entire state of Florida. There is no fishing time limit. Fish when ever you want where ever you want. All registered anglers must log into and upload their catch photos to www.cfshadderby.com. All photos must be taken using the official derby measuring device and include the official derby sponsor token.

This can be a family event everyone can enjoy. So go to the derby home page and find a sign-up sponsor location and sign up. Remember the tournament is free.

Be safe in the Florida sunshine and have a great and safe day on the water.

Indian River Paddle Classic Results

The 3rd Annual Indian River Paddle Classic is now history. What another great event. Bryan Cheeks, tournament director, said "Congrats the to the 60 anglers competing in the 2011, 3rd Annual IRPC. On day made just for those fishing from a kayak. Without a ripple on the water and limited boat traffic, the fishing was surprisingly feast or famine. While some came back with stories of multiple large fish, others came back with nothing to brag about. Congrats to our "Kayak Kids" who were all given a medal and a new reel for participating!" Mosquito Creek Outdoors in Apopka donated two Engel ice chests, Florida and Florida State colors, and Coastal Charities and Strike Zone donated the yellow Ocean Kayak that were big raffle prizes.

Paddle Classic Tournament Results.

Redfish / Trout SLAM Category

1st Richard Zaremba
2nd Dilan Arnold
3rd Mitch Roffer

RED Category

1st Steve Gibson
2nd Doug Fisher
3rd Joyce Myers

TROUT Category

1st Nick Dyroff
2nd Jose Vidal
3rd John Dobbins

Lady Angler Award Elaine Christian

Jr. Angler Award Owen Wetzel

Visit http://www.indianriverkayakfishing.com/ for tournament phots and other information.

Solar Shield Sunscreen Test 09/29/2011

On September 29th, I set out for Sebastian Inlet around 9:00AM to test Solar Shield sunscreen and its affect on catching fish and killing live bait. I arrived at the Sebastian Inlet State Park around 10:15AM. It was sunny with a high temperature of 89 Degrees. There was a 20% chance of thunder storms. The wind was out of the east at 5 mph. I started fishing on the north side of the inlet on the beach. I used two surf rods. I opened one of the three sunscreen sample packets, see photo to the left and applied the sunscreen to my face, neck, arms and hands. I did not wash my hands after applying the sunscreen. I started the day using frozen shrimp on a two-hook pompono rig using the small 7'-0" rod. I applied sunscreen directly to the shrimp. See photo to the left. After my first cast, I caught a 12"-14" whiting which I returned to the sea. On my 12 foot surf rod, I was using a single hook set up and 2' square chunks of frozen lady fish. While fishing from the beach side, I did not catch any fish on the big surf rod and frozen lady fish. After about an hour, I caught a small stingray on the small rod using frozen shrimp that had been coated with sunscreen. After about 2 hours of fishing, I packed up and moved to fish along the channel inlet where it opens up into the the Indian River. I started with frozen shrimp on the small rod and caught many very small pin fish which I fed to the birds. Because I was able to net finger mullet, I switched to live bait. After putting the live finger mullet in to my bucket, I squeezed a packet of sunscreen into the live bait bucket. I took a live mullet from the bucket and tossed it out into the inlet using the small rod. After about 20 minutes, I caught a small 16" redfish. I released it back into the water. I rebaited my hook and tossed it out. I fished for another two hours with out any luck. I was fishing in an area where there were other anglers. During the time I fished, I could not see any other anglers catching fish. I stopped fishing around 3:30 PM. He has designed a very cool kayak fishing light that floats. Using that here in Florida will save you a real hefty ticket by the marine patrol if you are fishing before dawn in your kayak without a light. The fine is over $200.00. PKF fishing lights and stakeout pole should interest all kayak anglers. It is a sit-on-top kakay that weighs in at 66 pounds with their comfortable seat. This kayak was designed with river anglers in mind but well suited for the saltwater flats fishing all along Florida's east coast. Professional kayak fisherman, Drew Gregory provided input into this kayak's design. The captain's meeting was held at Strike Zone fishing and tackle store on New Haven Avenue in Melbourne, Florida. Bryan Cheek was the host and did a great job explaining the rules and running the raffle. This was a catch and photo tournament. The weigh-in was held at the Lagoon House on U.S 1 in Melbourne, Florida. Over 55 anglers competed for prizes. I was reported, by Brian Cheek, "that it was a tough day on the water and with windy and muddy conditions, the snook bite was modest at best". The prizes for 1-3rd Red Fish, Trout, Snook and Slam. Because there were no winners in the Snook category, the Snook prizes were added to the general raffle making for a very exciting tournament conclusion. Over $5,000 was raised for Coastal Charities. All though I was not in the money, I had a great time by catching 12 catfish and two small under sized red fish. This non-profit charity is dedicated to funding youth education through activities in coastal waterways. To register go to www.coastalcharities.org and download an application. It is nestled between the Indian River and the Atlantic Ocean. It stretches from New Smyrna Beach in the north to Titusville in the south. There are many access points any where along the banks of the lagoon as long as one can find a place to park your vehicle and launch your kayak. The lagoon does not have a large tidal flow so water level remains fairly constant. Depending on lagoon location, alligators are present. During the warmer months, mosquitoes and noseeums can be a pest. The south end of the lagoon can be reached via Titusville by crossing the Max Brewer Causeway (highway 402) to Canaveral National Seashore and Playlinda Beach. There is a $5.00 user fee to enter the National Seashore. It is approximately 14.5 miles from Titusville to Playlinda beach.

Sebastian Inlet State Park - South Side

Launch Point L6 - Located at the south end of the park is a water access point located along A1A. The park is located approximately 18 miles south of Melbourne Beach, FL along A1A. The park is divided into two halves caused by the inlet. There is a $3.00 park user fee for a vehicle with one person and a $5.00 fee if there are two or more in the vehicle. Launch Point L4 - This is a water access point located on a small sandy beach lagoon inside the park by the main the parking lot. This point can give access to the ocean when the tidal flow has stopped. All other times, the access to the ocean, may be impassable. Boat traffic through the inlet can be very heavy. Launch Point L5 - This is a concrete boat ramp located in the south side of the park. The fishing along the north and south sides of the park, along the edges of the mangroves, for red fish, snook and trout can be very productive. One should pay strict attention to the tides as the water can be less than six inches deep in may areas at low tide. There are some oyster beds in this area with sea grass and sand being the predominate bottom cover.

Longs Point Campground and State Marina Launch Points

Launch Point L1 - This is a water access located at the entrance to the campground. All the reviews that I read told me that this was one of the best. All i had to do was to pick a boat. I especially liked the way the cockpit was laid out on the Tarpon series and the center rod holder. After making this choice, I looked for a Melbourne kayak rental location. I was in luck. Extreme Sports in Indian Harbor Beach sold and rented Wilderness System Kayaks.

EXTREME SPORTS
294 E EAU GALLIE BOULEVARD
INDIAN HARBOR BEACH, FL 32937
Phone: 321-779-4228

I was able to rent a Tarpon 140 sit-on-top kayak. I planned a test paddle in the 1,000 Islands area of Cocoa Beach. This was a great place to try out a kayak. The launch ramp is located at the end of Ramp Road. My Tarpon 140 has a dual rod holder system by Scotty. I get all my kayak accessories from Hook 1 - www.kayakfishinggear.com They carry a full line of Scotty kayak accessories.

The Yak Fisher
